Why is our attention directed towards supernatural miracles? It’s to strengthen our faith, as God promised that we would accomplish even greater things in Christ. However, why do we not witness these occurrences in our midst? Could it be due to a deficiency in faith or being preoccupied with worldly concerns that keep us busy? It is imperative that we begin to embrace and have faith in a God who performs extraordinary feats. This is why it is crucial for us to explore the depths of the Bible in order to enhance our faith. Our focus will be on the miraculous events recorded in the book of Acts.
The Book of Acts, also known as the Acts of the Apostles, is an incredible account of the early Christian church’s journey and the spreading of the Gospel message. Within its pages, we encounter a multitude of supernatural miracles that showcase God’s power and the extraordinary work of the Holy Spirit. These miraculous events serve as a testament to the divine authority behind the message of Jesus Christ. In this blog post, we will explore some of the remarkable supernatural miracles recorded in the Book of Acts.
- The Coming of the Holy Spirit: One of the most significant miracles in Acts is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. As the disciples gathered in Jerusalem, suddenly, there came a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and tongues of fire appeared above each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages, enabling them to communicate the gospel to people from various nations (Acts 2:1-4). This miraculous event marked the birth of the early church and empowered the disciples to boldly proclaim the message of Jesus.
- Healing and Restoration: Acts portrays numerous instances of miraculous healings. For instance, Peter and John encountered a lame beggar at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. Through the power of Jesus’ name, they commanded the man to rise, and he was instantly healed, leaping and praising God (Acts 3:1-10). Similarly, Peter’s shadow falling upon the sick brought healing and restoration (Acts 5:15-16). Furthermore, Paul called a man with crippled feet to “stand up” and the man jumped to his feet and started walking (Acts 14:8-10). God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles. When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled. These miracles demonstrated that the same power that dwelled in Jesus was at work through His disciples.
- Resurrections: In Acts 1:3, it is stated that after Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to His disciples over a span of forty days, providing them with many convincing proofs that He was alive. During this time, Jesus spoke to them about the kingdom of God, emphasizing the significance of this message. In Acts 1:9-11, after spending time with His disciples following His resurrection, Jesus ascends to heaven. As the disciples watch, a cloud envelops Him, and He disappears from their sight. Suddenly, two angels appear and inform the disciples that Jesus will return in the same way He ascended to heaven. This event signifies the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and foreshadows His eventual second coming. Acts contains two other extraordinary accounts of people being raised from the dead. In Joppa, the Apostle Peter was called to the bedside of a beloved disciple named Tabitha, who had died. Peter knelt and prayed, and by the power of God, Tabitha was brought back to life (Acts 9:36-41). In another instance, the Apostle Paul was preaching in Troas when a young man named Eutychus fell from a window and died. Paul went to him, embraced him, and he was restored to life (Acts 20:7-12). These resurrections serve as powerful reminders of God’s authority over life and death.
- Deliverance from Bondage: Acts narrates the miraculous release of the Apostle Peter from prison on two occasions. The first time, Peter was imprisoned by Herod Agrippa, guarded by four squads of soldiers. However, an angel of the Lord appeared, and Peter’s chains fell off. Guided by the angel, Peter walked past the guards and the iron gate that led to the city, escaping unharmed (Acts 12:1-11). The second instance involved an imprisonment under Roman authorities. Once again, an angel came, awakening Peter and leading him past the guards and the prison doors (Acts 12:1-11). Similarly, Paul and Silas were miraculously rescued from their imprisonment. While they were in prison, they prayed and sang hymns to God. Suddenly, an earthquake shook the prison, opening the doors and loosening the prisoners’ chains. The jailer, thinking the prisoners had escaped, was about to harm himself. However, Paul assured him that everyone was still there. The jailer was deeply moved by their integrity and witnessed the power of God. He asked Paul and Silas how to be saved, and they shared the message of salvation with him and his household. The jailer and his family believed in Jesus, were baptized, and Paul and Silas were set free from prison (Acts 16:25-34). These supernatural interventions demonstrate God’s ability to rescue His faithful followers from any situation.
- Stephens miracles: People started lying about Stephen and he was brought to the high council and at this point his face became as bright as an angel (Acts 6:15). Prior to Stephens death, he was full of the Holy Spirit and he gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honour at God’s right hand. (Acts 7: 55)
- Other supernatural miracles: Philip was asked by an angel to go a desert road to meet with the treasurer of Ethiopia. After he met the treasure and gave him the message of salvation and baptising him, the spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. (Acts 8:26-39). Paul, after being shipwrecked on the island of Malta, is bitten by a venomous snake. Despite the locals’ initial assumption that he is a criminal being punished, Paul remains unharmed as he shakes off the snake into the fire. This miraculous event leads the islanders to reconsider their perception of Paul and view him as someone of great significance. (Acts 28:3-5)
- Saul’s conversion – In Acts 9:3-19, the passage describes an encounter between Saul (later known as Paul) and Jesus. Saul, who was persecuting Christians, was on his way to Damascus when a bright light from heaven suddenly surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard Jesus speaking to him, asking why he was persecuting Him. Blinded by the light, Saul was led into the city where he remained without sight for three days. During this time, Ananias, a disciple of Jesus, received a vision from the Lord instructing him to go to Saul and restore his sight. Ananias hesitated at first due to Saul’s reputation, but he obeyed God’s command and went to Saul, laying his hands on him. Instantly, Saul regained his sight, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and was baptized. He then spent several days with the disciples in Damascus, preaching about Jesus and proclaiming Him as the Son of God.
- Herod’s Death: Herod Agrippa, the king ruling over Judea’s death resulted from an angel striking him due to his acceptance of people worshipping him as a god, without acknowledging God’s sovereignty. (Acts 12:20-23)
The Book of Acts presents a collection of extraordinary supernatural miracles that testify to the power of God and the work of the Holy Spirit in the early Christian church. From the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost to miraculous healings, resurrections, and deliverances, these events showcased God’s authority and authenticated the message of Jesus Christ. As we study these accounts, we are reminded of the same power available to us today through the Holy Spirit. The miracles in Acts serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement for believers as we continue to spread the Gospel and live out our faith in the world
